B2B companies plan to spend more on e-commerce technology

BY PAUL DEMERYManaging Editor, B2B E-Commerce

75% of firms expect their spending budgets to increase next year.

Business-to-business executives are getting more bullish on e-commerce technology, with 75% of them expecting to spend more on it next year, Forrester Research Inc. says in a recently released study. That’s up from 73% a year earlier who said the same in a prior study.

Forrester compiled those and other figures in a second-quarter 2016 survey of about 100 B2B professionals as part of the Forrester/Internet Retailer Q2 2016 Global B2B Sell-Side Survey. Forrester conducts the annual survey in conjunction with Vertical Web Media, the publisher of B2BecNews and Internet Retailer. Andy Hoar, vice president and principal analyst for B2B e-commerce at Forrester, presented findings of the study during a recentwebinar hosted by B2BecNews.

The survey notes that 45% of respondents in the second quarter said they planned to upgrade or change their e-commerce technology platform within 18 months, up from 35% who cited similar plans in a second quarter 2015 study.

Companies are also spending more on e-commerce technology as a percentage of their online sales, Forrester says. Respondents in the 2016 study said they expect to spend 9% of online sales on e-commerce technology in 2017, up from 6% of online sales in 2016 as noted in the year-earlier study.

Survey respondents in this year’s study cited their top priorities for technology investment as e-commerce platforms and integration of e-commerce technology with back-end business operations software.

Following are the percentages of B2B e-business professionals who cited their priorities in technology investment for 2016 (respondents were requested to select all that apply):

● E-commerce platform, 57%

● Integration of e-commerce platform with back-end technology for managing operations like inventory and customer orders, 57%

● Mobile sites and apps, 47%

● Web content management, 46%

● Multichannel integration, 39%

● Product content management tools, 37%

● Site governance, 13%
